Cool Air!

Our house was built in the 1950's.  When we moved into it last summer there was nary a ceiling fan or any sort of cooling system in the house.  And it was 99 degrees on our digital thermostat each night.  Seriously. How did those families do it?!?

Since then we have had ceiling fans installed in almost every room and beginning in June, I ceased cooking on the stove top or in the oven after 9am each day.  We also started an elaborate system of opening all the windows in the house each night around 8p and then closing them up around 8a in an attempt to keep all of that cool nighttime air in.  But each night at bedtime our thermostat still read:

And that's just not fun.  For anyone.

So we spoke to some people around town and got a few bids and this week we had a swamp cooler installed!  For those of you in the mid-west, swamp coolers are essentially air conditioners.  They are very efficient in low humidity environments (which is why those of you in mid-Missouri have never heard of them).  They were a good choice for our house because we didn't have any previously installed duct work and because of the single level layout of the house.

So over the course of the week, Jeff (he played semi-pro hockey and has a thick Minnesota accent; I liked him a lot!), worked away at making new outside duct work for us and installing our new pride & joy.

And now when we go to bed at night, the thermostat reads 72.  And that is so cool!  hehehe
